Zombie Nurses are not just dressed for Halloween

Zombie nurse Zombie Nurses are not just dressed for Halloween

Zombies are real! I saw them the other morning as I was clocking in. I started noticing them in the parking lot before I ever got out of the truck. I hesitated before I unlocked the door … but some of them looked normal so I took a chance. As I walked down the side walk all of a sudden I noticed I was turning into a zombie too… how did that happen?

There was a mask that took over and I reacted just like the rest of them. Dragging one foot in front of the other in single file, no one speaking, smiling or laughing. Walking along as if a there was an unspoken rule of no talking.

Up a flight of steps and with the same movement they all took a swipe at the clock with the badge that tagged them in. The rush against time, the swipe of a badge, the same motion every day at the same time. The very last minute before they would get in trouble.

*sign* I stood to the side holding my bag of supplies. You know the one with snacks, lunch, water bottles, ink pens and other useless stuff we carry. I waited for the person who always brought a smile to my face and I saw it had happened to her too…

She was a zombie.

Nurses don’t just dress up for Halloween they dress up daily for the zombie walk. I didn’t think it had happened to me until this morning when I saw I was in the same motion and the same mood that 13 other people had.

Most places have a meter that reads “full” or a alarm goes off when the gases rise too high in an area so you can put on a mask for safety. Burnt out in nursing shows signs fairly early but most nurses don’t listen to the warning messages as they start coming in.

Nurses tell me daily they wish they could do something else, but very few take the actions to make it happen. Many nurses stick with their nursing career because of the time and money they spent getting their degree. That doesn’t make the job any easier, it doesn’t make them happy, and the money is not always good enough to overcome the stress of a caretaking job.

I saw the signs beginning in 2009 and started a shift towards business but didn’t really know anything about it however I was drawn to it like a bee is to a flower. I couldn’t get enough and wanted to learn more and more all the time. I have yet to be bored in my office at home and I enjoy everything I learn. On my days off from the job I can’t wait to get in my office and get started. I can work way into the night and still wish I had one more hour.My job is no longer like that… it sad to admit out loud but to be honest. I am not alone, I am just brave enough to say it. The other zombies don’t even know they have been transformed.Don’t let this be you. Seriously life is so short and we spend so much time doing what we don’t enjoy. That is insane!! In the name of a cell phone bill, a nicer car, a bigger house we will work at a shitty job we hate to have the things we love to own.Are you jumping out of bed to get to work?
Are you whistling all the way to work in rush hour traffic to get to a boss who screams at you for being 30 seconds late not

glad you arrived safe to work?
Can you do this daily routine you have right now for another 20 years?
When was the last time your boss came to you and personally thanked you for doing a great job? Has it ever happened?
I used to look through binoculars to see my dream it was so far off…but now…I can almost reach my finger out a touch it. I began reaching my dream while I worked full time – in a part time business. It can happen and it will. How bad do you really want it?

You have to want it like you want fresh air to breath. That is when the dream will come true.
