Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions of a Recruiter

By Kaci Seals

With the New Year comes a time of reflection, celebration and goal setting. Below are 10 resolutions that will make you an even better recruiter in 2011.

10. Celebrate…Be proud of what you accomplished last year! Take a few moments to list your successes and then set some even higher goals for the New Year.

9. Get off the bench and on the train! When was the last time you cold called, sourced straight off the internet, and visited a social networking site or a job board other than your company’s Applicant Tracking System (ATS). Being a recruiter is not just about checking for new applicants in the ATS each day. If this is your current strategy, 2011 may well result in you being left behind.

8. Mix it up…Commit to learning one new recruitment tactic this year and then focus on mastering it. Does Twitter still seem like a mystery? Follow a colleague or follow me (stlmorecruiter) to see how it works. Dig in and try it for yourself.

7. Be passionate…The best recruiters work in industries they are truly passionate about.

6. Embrace change…Technology advances, processes are streamlined, roles change. It’s bound to occur in the New Year. How will you react?

5. Be truthful…with yourself, your applicant and your hiring manager. Presenting a less than qualified candidate just so you can say you’ve done so helps no one.

4. Communicate…Keep your applicants and hiring managers better informed. Be up front about how long you think it will take to fill the position and then work hard to maintain that time frame. Communicate with them along the way about any roadblocks. Both your applicant and your hiring manager become better partners in the process when they know what to expect and how they can help you help them.

3. Anticipate needs…Is your candidate in another hiring process? Is your hiring manager taking an extended vacation? If you stay ahead of the recruitment process so delays do not result everyone benefits.

2. Understand your pipeline. Do you know how many applicants you have to touch for each of the positions you recruit in order to hire a rock star? Spend some time tracking what you do. Patterns will emerge. Knowledge is a powerful tool you can leverage for future success.

And the number one resolution for the New Year…

1. Become a proactive vs. reactive recruiter. Do you have positions that challenge you more than others? What are you doing to constantly build a pipeline for those? The best recruiters can go to their “bank” of contacts as soon as they have an opening. Can you?

May 2011 be a prosperous and happy year for you!
