Tips for Good Oral Hygiene

dental_hygieneGood oral hygiene is important so that your teeth and gums stay healthy and clean. I know this because I was a dental assistant for several years and saw the result of good hygiene and also saw what happens when teeth were not taken care of properly.

Part of having good oral hygiene is brushing properly, flossing and using mouthwash at the end of brushing and flossing. Of course seeing your dentist twice a year for a checkup and cleaning is also part of having good oral hygiene.

It is important to note that in between regular visits to the dentist there are other things you can do to maintain good oral hygiene such as eating a balanced diet and limiting snacks in between meals, brushing and flossing every day, using toothpaste and mouthwash that contain fluoride, ensuring that your entire family drinks fluoridated water and being sure to brush your teeth properly.

Brushing your teeth is not difficult, it just takes time and effort. To brush your teeth properly tilt the brush at a 45 degree angle and roll the brush away from the gum line. Then, gently brush the inside, outside and chewing surface of each tooth, using brief back and forth strokes. Next, gently brush you tongue to loosen bacteria and to give you fresher breath.

Most everyone knows that oral hygiene is important to keep their teeth in good shape and to enhance their appearance but good oral hygiene is also important to prevent bone loss, stroke, heart disease and other serious medical conditions. Another good reason to have regular dental visits is to prevent oral cancer. By seeing your dentist regularly, he or she can screen you for symptoms of oral cancer. If oral cancer is caught early, it can be cured. In addition, gum disease can lead to tooth loss and is another good reason to have your teeth examined on a regular basis. Some may not know it but if gum disease is not taken care of, it can lead to a stroke, heart disease and gum disease. It is important to note that bad breath can also be prevented with regular dental care.

Most importantly, a dental hygienist can also help you keep your teeth in good shape because he or she can remove stains that come from coffee, tea and tobacco from staining your smile. Tooth whitening techniques that come from a dental hygienist can give you a beautiful smile.

Keep in mind that there are other things you can do to maintain good oral hygiene such as always rinsing your tooth brush with water after brushing. It is important, also, to keep your tooth brush in an upright position and let it air-dry until you use it again. Most importantly, be careful not to cover your toothbrushes in a closed container. It is also important to replace your toothbrush every three to four months.
