The big Facebook launch day

Worried how the Facebook page launch would go

I usually don’t write about my day job very much.   I sometimes write about things that come up there  that give me ideas to talk about here, but I not about the day-to-day activities.  I am going to change-up on that one today.

You may recall that I moved out of labor relations into a new job assignment managing our social media efforts.  I previously wrote about making that transition here and here.    After taking the new assignment, and throwing a couple of personal emergencies during June, my blogging pretty much came to a screeching halt.  My speaking and conference reporting also has been non-existent  since I had to cancel out of People Report Summer Camp,  the SHRM annual conference, and a couple of local speaking gigs.  Thanks to all those who filled in for me, and apologies to those who had to scrabble to fill the voids I created.

Most of the work I have done this month involved prepping for the release of our first social media effort, a Facebook page.   We launched that page on Friday, July 1, 2011 at 7 AM.    I was not terribly worried, but I was curious.     As it turned, we did alright.  At one point, we were literally adding one hundred news fans per minute!  We also got some coverage picked up by both local and national news.

We added 8,600 fans on day 1,  crossed the 10,000 mark in 26.5 hours, and will probably hit 13,000 by the end of the day today.    I am very satisfied with those results.

Clearly, I didn’t this all by myself. We had a lot of people working on this project, and all of them did a lot to make sure we were able to pull off this launch.   Well done, everyone.   It’s great to get started.    Can’t wait to start the next platform launch!
