We’re looking forward to SMX Israel 2014, the country’s premier annual search marketing event. Barry Schwartz, editor of Search Engine Roundtable, has put together another strong lineup of top-notch speakers this year in Jerusalem! It’s a full day of keynotes, panels, forums and networking for marketing professionals that helps keep us on track for the upcoming year.
Whether you’re going to SMX Israel for the first time or you’re a veteran, now is a great time to see the schedule and tailor the day to your needs and interests. But we’ve got extra insight from SEO expert and long-time SMX speaker and attendee Aaron Friedman.
Aaron will be at SMX Israel representing Kahena Digital Marketing, where he serves as Director of SEO, moderating multiple panels about link building and content strategies. Aaron attended last year as a visitor from America – and has participated in 5 or 6 other SMX events in the United States and Canada – but last spring moved to Israel with his family. He fielded some questions from our team both about the conference and about some search marketing “dos” and “don’ts”:
What tips do you have for first-time attendees to SMX Israel on how to get the most out of the day?
SMX Israel is a very different experience than the other SMXs I have been too. It has a more tight-knit feel, so you really get a chance to network with people in the Israel SEO scene. With the high quality of international speakers and attendees, it’s also a unique opportunity for people in Israel to connect with SEOs from around the world who come in for the show.
The keynote speaker at SMX Israel 2014 will be John Mueller of Google. The conference includes guest speakers and panelists from North America and Europe.
What’s the most common SEO mistake you see organizations making today?
I think the most common mistake people make is chasing the algorithm. SEO is ever-changing and will continue to be ever-changing. If all you do is spend your time chasing the algorithm instead of evolving and creating sustainable, future-proof internet marketing, you will eventually get left behind.
SEO seems to be taking a dramatic shift away from the power of keywords. What one tip would you recommend for companies that are struggling to break out of the keyword-based mindset?
Think content. Keywords are great, and a grouping of keywords is what makes content. But the quality of that content is extremely important. If you are so focused on keywords that you forget about content, or even the context, then you are doing it wrong.
Now that you’ve experienced both “sides of the coin,” what differences have you noticed between SEO in Israel and SEO in the United States?
Well, I am told I can consider myself “new” in Israel for at least the first year. Honestly, I haven’t seen a big difference. Israel seemed to be a bit behind the US a year ago when I came to SMX Israel last year. But I have quickly seen it catch up and the mindset of clients and local SEOs change.
What’s your favorite social media platform (as a personal user) – and why?
I am probably most active on Facebook, especially because I like sharing my family’s “journey to Israel” and it’s easier for friends to really comment there.
Many thanks to Aaron for answering our questions!
We’re just days away from SMX Israel. Pixel/Point Press, a sponsor of this year’s conference, will be covering the proceedings on Facebook, Twitter (hashtag #smxisrael) and Instagram and following up with blog posts about conference highlights.
