Coaching teams and leaders I hear many stories of poor communication, planning, inter-personal conflicts, spite and revenge, incompetent management, in fighting, out fighting, cliques, etc…

People are always convinced that the other person is doing some behavior on purpose and that every-time they meet this bad behavior happens.

In reality it doesn’t, it may happen most of the time but it never happens ALL the time.

An example. I was coaching an Executive Management team who all knew each other very well. The communication between Sasha director of sales and Pat director of IT was horrible, and everyone including Sasha & Pat, knew about it. It was really ruining the Executive team meeting and getting work done.

I sat with both of the separately and asked the following;

  • I have observed that Pat/Sasha and you don’t speak and listen to each other very well, tell me about that?
  • Do you agree that as a team we need to solve this?
  • If we can improve the communication between Sasha/Pat and you what will YOU be able to do more of / or instead of that you cannot do now?
  • Share with me an example of one time perhaps even a tiny bit that Sasha/Pat and you communicated well on a project?
  • How did that happen? What did you do?
  • What was Pat’s/Sasha’s role in making that happen?
  • Knowing Pat/Sasha as well as you do how can you replicate what described earlier to happen again?

This allowed each person to find that it is NOT ALL the time, and that there are exceptions to our beliefs. Times when we have found the solution and just don’t realize it.

Now Your Turn;

  • Think about an existing problem you are dealing with at work.
  • Think and reflect upon one time, even just a little bit-when this problem was solved.
  • Describe that solution in detail-Time, Place, Environment, Who was there, Before, After, During etc…
  • Figure out how to make that solution happen again.

Making teams and leaders better take a purposeful process and plan to find the solutions that work. The Exponent Leadership Process is that solution.
