Costas Markides: Academic and HR Adventurer — Plus picks for the rest of the show!
HR Tech Europe 2013 is in full swing and is already proving to be a bustling, educational and entertaining experience. We’re busy meeting new contacts, reconnecting with old ones and soaking up all the great information, inspiration and insight already presented in the myriad of sessions
The conference kicked off on a high note with Costas Markides, Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at London Business School. Before a packed auditorium, he shared his insightful way of thinking about how companies can truly innovate simply by looking more closely at company culture.
Costas shared his thoughts on the current nature of the way people work: globally, socially and openly. He touted the rise of social technologies as the catalyst for change and the gateway for an evolution in workplace culture.
Of the many takeaways that resonated deeply with the Globoforce team, Costas told the crowd:
- Employees are a company’s customers. They need to be taken care of, listened to and attended to.
- Employees are first and foremost searching for meaning at work. Employees who find meaning are more motivated and remain in their current positions longer.
- The consumerization of technology has created a global workforce. This global workforce must have a strong shared purpose and value system to succeed. Mobile technologies and social platforms can make this a reality.
- Companies need “customized performance management.”

Costas also discussed the virtues of a workforce that is connected, engaged and interacting constantly with one another all across the globe through mobile technologies. Mobile technologies just like the ones Globoforce has created! For us that was a validating and inspiring way to kick off the conference!
