5. In War for Talent, “Brogrammers” Will Be Losers. Gina Trapani: “The tech industry’s testosterone level can make the thickest-skinned women consider a different career. But the rise of the brogrammer joke and its ensuing backlash has some benefits: It helps talented women choose worthy employers, it gives a name and face to a problem that plagues the industry and it publicly shames some of the most sexist offenders.”

4. A War for Talent in THIS economy? HR Examiner: “The number of job openings is now at pre-recession levels. Historically, the unemployment rate would be at pre-recession levels as well. … One explanation for the chart is that the people who are unemployed do not have the skills required to fill the positions available. The jobs that are being created (social media pros, data analysts, bio technicians, health care in general) are for people who have other than the skills available.”

3. Poaching Candidates: It’s Not New, Just Easier, in the Age of Social Media. Lance Haun: “Social media is a game changer in many ways but it is still hard to game human nature and ability. And when it is blamed for something that was going on before its time, there’s usually a counter-story there. That’s why I was a bit amused when I saw an article saying that social media has enabled the poaching of employees.”

2. Talent Shortages, “Selfsumer” Employees Among Biggest Challenges for Canadian Tech Startups. The Vancouver Sun: Recruiting talent and keeping employees top concern over revenue as the biggest challenge facing Canadian tech start-ups today, according to a PricewaterhouseCoopers survey of 150 startup chief executives released today that found managing talent is the most vexing problem for 26 per cent of the CEOs, ahead of revenue, which rated as the top issue for 25 per cent.

1. Aon Hewitt Says NYC Is World’s Lowest-Risk City for Recruiting, Hiring. Insurance Journal: “New York maybe crowded and noisy, and the cost of living in the city is sky-high. But it’s also the best city in the entire world for recruiting, employing and relocating employees, according to a new study. Aon Hewitt’s 2012 “People Risk Index” measured the risks that organizations face with recruitment, employment and relocation in 131 cities worldwide. The index analyzed factors as demographics, access to education, talent development, employment practices and government regulations.”
