Inside HR: Jessica Miller-Merrell on How Social Media and Mobile Are Changing HR

Human resources professionals are finally beginning to understand social media, mobile technology and the effect they are having on employees and the workplace, Jessica Miller-Merrill of Xceptional HR told Monster at the Society for Human Resource Management’s 2012 conference in Atlanta.

In the past HR folks would refer to her as a “blooger” or a “tweeter,” said Miller-Merrill, but now they seem to understand “how we can help use these technologies to make the workplace a better place for the people who we work with and spend more time with than our spouses and our family members.”

“Really your mobile phone is becoming your all-in-one computer device that you’re really using to be able to live your life,” and that realization is prompting HR departments and recruiters to implement mobile applicant tracking systems and mobile applicant processes, she said.

As HR is realizing that “employees are on their phones, they’re tweeting, they’re Facebooking, they’re blogging,” it’s realizing that it’s becoming part of their work for things such as sexual-harassment investigations, knowing what employees are up to in general and getting in touch with people, she said. “I can talk to you faster via text or Twitter than I can picking up the phone. In fact, I know what you’re doing in real-time by watching the Twitter stream.”
