Inside HR: Dwane Lay

There is an integral three-part flow of technology development in the modern world of human resources, says Dwane Lay, head of HR process design for Dovetail Software. It’s “people, processes, and technology,” in that order of importance and that chronological sequence.

These days, the technology in the HR arena is shifting toward automated talent acquisition with an emphasis on finding the right talent for an organization and putting them in the right roles, says Lay. But without good people and a good talent-acquisition process, technology won’t help much. “If you automate a bad process, all you get is an automatically bad process,” he explains.

Social media has opened up the world around us and connected people who would have never met a mere 20 years ago, says Lay. In this connected environment, everyone becomes a salesperson or recruiter for the organization they work, which in turn makes the talent-acquisition process more broad and inclusive.
