In Business Suits or Pajamas?

The workplace is no longer set in stone. Or even set in bricks and mortar. As the controversy over the recent decision by Yahoo! to nix telecommuting shows, people now work everywhere. Online. Offline. In the office. On the road. In pajamas on the couch.

telecommuting technology

At TSheets, we understand the decision made by Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer. There’s something about being in the same room and office building with a group of creative, dynamic people that sparks a certain energy and spurs ideas on to collaborative action.

On the other hand, telecommuting offers real benefits. This week is actually “Telework Week 2013,” an effort by Mobile Work Exchange to encourage agencies, organizations and individual employees to make the pledge and work remotely. To date, there are over 100,000 people vowing to work from home between today and March 8, with an anticipated $7.6 million in savings and $9.7 million pounds of pollutants saved. Last year, the effort put 250,000 hours back into participants’ days simply by not travelling an aggregate 6.4 million miles to work. And for busy family lives, nothing says workplace satisfaction like flexibility.

As an innovative tech startup, we’ve done our fair share of workplace experimentation. We’ve designed workweeks where we intermix assigned office days with work from home days. So we could have face time, and focused alone time, in the same go. Recently however, especially when we moved into a new, larger office space with a riverfront view, we all work together as a team. Most of the time. And it has been fantastic. There’s a go-get-em spirit in the air that you just can’t deny.

At the end of the day, however, the real question should be: How productive was this day for any given employee? Perception is not always reality. People might slack off at the office building, wasting the day chatting near the proverbial water cooler. Or they might spend the day at home focused and motivated.

That’s where time tracking can really make a huge impact. For just shy of seven years, TSheets has been a forerunner in business technology advancements that have created and refined solutions to enable more accountable telecommuting and overall work lives. TSheets offers time tracking designed to go anywhere your employees do. When employees and their managers can see how work time is actually utilized, they can then make more intelligent workplace decisions based in fact, and more tailored to the demands of their business and staff.

At TSheets, we believe flexibility is all. Especially when it comes to the way employees track time.

Technology is power, and creates power players of us all. Even when we’re in our pajamas.
