How to Improve the Load Time of a Webpage

load timeOne thing you need to keep in mind when you design a website is how quickly it loads in various browsers. Like anyone else, you probably become frustrated when a site won’t load quickly. There are so many other options out there that it’s tempting to just click away to a different site. That’s precisely what visitors to your site will do if they encounter long load times, so it’s important to remedy the situation as quickly as possible. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to do that.

Optimize Your Images

Images can increase the load time of a page considerably. Of course, you don’t want to create a site that doesn’t have any images. It’s going to be one big wall of text, and no one is going to enjoy that. You don’t have to go without images; you just have to optimize them properly. Instead of uploading large image files and using tags to cut them down to size, resize them in Photoshop or another program and then upload them. Try not to include too many images on a single page to ensure that it loads as quickly as possible.

Avoid Redirects

Sites that have too many page redirects tend to load slowly. Browsers have to process additional information to bring users to the right place, and that takes extra time. As a general rule of thumb, try not to use redirects at all. It’s sometimes absolutely necessary, of course, but you should make a point of doing away with them once the new pages have been indexed by the search engines. Updating your sitemaps will go a long way toward speeding up the process.

Optimize Your Code

There are a few simple ways to optimize your code to make your pages load quickly. For one thing, put style sheet references at the top. This allows them to be rendered progressively, which makes for smoother and faster page loads. Another great tip is to place script references at the bottom. If possible, put them right before the closed body tag. Browsers won’t be bogged down processing these scripts while trying to load the pages on your site, so the pages will appear to load a lot more quickly.

Take advantage of tools such as Google Analytics’ site speed tool to test the load times of the pages on your site. Use them regularly to ensure that everyone is accessing your site without any problems.
