How to Find a Job While You Sleep

young man resting in a sofaWhen you need to find a job, the biggest limiting factor you face is time. A job search requires research, phone calls, networking, applications, emails, etc… But there are only so many hours in a day for all of those activities. And if you’re still working at the same time you’re trying to find a job, then you have even less time available.

What if there were a way to find a job while you sleep?

Residual Attention

If you’re a company or individual selling a service, then you face a similar challenge. To make more money, you need to sell more hours or raise your hourly rate. Both of those present their own challenges. The key to really escalating revenues is residual income – money that just shows up in your account day after day, week after week.

The way to apply this strategy to your job search is to earn “residual attention.” This means creating a system that works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to call attention to you and your job search. Developing and maintaining that system is what #CareerGravity is all about, but how exactly does it help you find a job while you sleep?

Fuel Up With Content

If we think of this system as a machine we’re building, then it needs some sort of energy source. Content is the fuel that keeps the machine running. Your WordPress resume is a great source of this content but you can use other sources like video, images, presentations, etc…

Links – The Gift That Keeps On Giving

Once this content is created, getting other websites to link to it is important for two reasons. First, it obviously spreads awareness and generates more traffic to your site. Second, these links act as a signal to search engines that your site has good stuff. The more links there are pointing to your website, the higher you’ll appear in search results.

Use a free tool like Google’s Webmaster to track inbound links and search impressions.

Here are some ideas for creating these links:

  • Most of your social media profiles allow you to add websites, so use them to point to your content.
  • Add links to your site on other blogs in comments you leave or in Q&A sections of sites like LinkedIn and Quora.
  • Add your site to directories for groups you belong to like alumni associations or non-profit groups.
  • Guest post on other blogs and have your author bio link back to your site.
  • Share links to your content on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, and other social media channels.

Once you’ve created this content and start generating inbound links, people will begin finding through search engines and on social media channels. These links behave like compound interest over time. The more links you accumulate, the more links you will generate. They will then work on your behalf to generate residual attention – even while you sleep.
