How to attract, hire & retain veterans

Tomorrow it’s all about how to attract, hire and retain veterans in the workforce at Luzerne County Community College Educational Conference Center in Nanticoke, PA. The conference is geared toward HR, Recruiters, Hiring Managers and C-Level corporate decision makers serious about implementing or strengthening veteran hiring initiatives within their organizations. There will also be social workers from the community who want to better understand how to help their clients, and representatives from campus career services and veterans clubs from a variety of local colleges – all wanting to improve how they help veterans and their spouses transition into the civilian workforce.

In my work with Tri-Vets Community Action Team and NEPA Veterans Multicare Alliance, the most common inquiry I receive from company representatives is that they want to hire veterans but don’t know where to begin. I receive a lot of messages asking if I could pass on a job post, if I know anyone for a particular job or how to connect with veterans who are job seekers. I do it – but I would much rather people learn how to fish. This conference will do just that.

  • Department of Labor tax and VA training incentives and programs
  • Employer services provided by Veterans Representatives through PA CareerLink®
  • How to support Veterans in the workplace, military structure, culture and deployment
  • How to develop and brand a corporate culture that appeals to Veterans
  • How to source, interview, offer, onboard and retain Veterans in your workforce

Employers recognize the skills and characteristics veterans bring from military to civilian employment. Many want to harness the self-discipline, technical skills, leadership, flexibility, determination, experience, and other coveted competencies veterans possess. How to purposefully attract, hire and retain is a niche and somewhat complex initiative – best understood and executed by veterans who work in the areas of corporate culture, candidate selection and employee retention. However, it can be taught – and that’s what we are set out to do tomorrow.

The government shut down and this conference were at horrid odds with one another. Presenters who required government authorization to travel or were furloughed had to back out. However, we’re very happy with the expert line up of presenters and I know tomorrow will make a difference.
