Facebook Chat is Now In-Your-Face

Previously, Facebook Chat feature was tucked away at the bottom right of the page. Now, Facebook is making its messaging feature as visible as it can be – occupying the entire right-side of the page. On the sidebar, you can now at a glance see your friends who are currently online. Like before, click her name/avatar to start a conversation.

The messaging sidebar column remains visible no matter where you are on Facebook platform – profile, Fan pages, applications, settings, blogs. You can choose an option to hide the sidebar and it will shrink into ‘Chat’ on bottom-right. Click ‘Chat’ and the sidebar will appear again. The appearance of the sidebar is a default setting.

For sure, this can certainly increase the usage of Facebook messaging. In coming days, we should expect to see deeper integration with Beluga group messenger, which Facebook bought in March 2011. And maybe even merge with the newly launched Skype video chat.

What do you think of the new Facebook Chat sidebar? Let us know your thoughts below.
