Employee Engagement and Union Engagement

Employee Engagement: “You don’t get me I am part of the union.”

Engagement for all. The subtitle of this post has a line from the  chorus of the song,  Part of the Union.  I have always maintained that employee engagement must be for the benefit of everyone — it is so much more than sucking out more discretionary effort from workers who already feel taxed to the max. We need to work together and it is ironic and tragic that we can work together in the same organization and feel at such cross purposes with one another.

Work in union with each other. We need to work together and a recent article  from the Vancouver Courier outlined how we can all work together: Union head blesses city survey. I salute CUPE local 15 for supporting the city’s engagement assessment and the city for providing the full results to CUPE 15. The article stated:

The message from CUPE 15, which represents 2,500 city and park board employees, reads in part, “We believe this survey will provide the employer and our union with valuable information to improve your workplace, and your career with the City of Vancouver. The employer has agreed to provide the full results of the Employee Engagement Survey to CUPE 15.”

Next step. I hope that the information helps the employer and employees work together to create approaches, strategies, and structural changes that increase employee engagement for the benefit of the city, the union, the employees, and the citizens of Vancouver.
