Educating Candidates and the Value of a Resume

By Melissa Pipkin

“Can I just come to your HR Department and drop off my resume?” How many times as HR professionals do we hear this question on a daily basis.  I hear it rather often.  My response has become canned.  “Please go to our website and fill out a profile, you can attach your resume and apply for our positions.”

However, when I review profiles online, candidates are not uploading their resumes.  Is the technology difficult? Is the operator less savvy? Is it perceived that one  isn’t needed?  These are important questions to consider.  With the vast number of job boards and online job postings, many candidates feel as they spend much of their time applying into the vast cosmos to never be heard from again.  However, if they have not taken the time to apply correctly with the instructions clearly posted on the website, should the outcome be expected to be any different?   From my perspective,  and I feel like I do it all day long, we must continue to educate the community one at a time – it is a continuous process.

Note to applicants, when you go to an employment website, please attach a current resume that states your interest clearly and concisely.  Only sending your name, contact information and last employer does not serve as a satisfactory amount of information to review qualifications against the needs of the position.  In this ever expanding and complex maze of job boards and employment sites, it is important to review and to attach a resume.  Who was it that said, “ to do something only halfway…” anyway you see where I am going with this.

Let us all keep in mind that not everyone knows everything in the same way, but when you apply, do it right. Attach a resume!  Is it the pace of our lives today?  Is it the culture of instant gratification?  Recruiters and HR Professionals, continue to stay patient and continue to educate.  Candidates, continue to stay patient and continue to educate yourselves.

In the end we will meet in the middle with a more positive experience for all.
