Are you a successful Recruiter?

A few weeks ago, I implemented my training program for a 5k run next month and while running, my thoughts went to the recent growth I’ve witnessed at Pinstripe and the success of our organization. I contemplated organizational success and how critical each individual’s performance is to the success. What does it take for a Recruiter to be successful?

Recruiting to me has been like training for a sport. Training requires dedication and commitment to stick to your individual plan and reach your goal. The same is true for recruiting success. Recruiting takes mental toughness and the aptitude to proactively respond to multiple, conflicting demands, in order to deliver high levels of performance on a consistent basis. A successful Recruiter thrives in tough conditions, while building relationships, asking questions, and continually focusing on goals.

The Recruiting landscape is very competitive and not every Recruiter is successful. A Recruiter cannot rely on emails, but instead must take advantage of relationship building and selling opportunities to recruit passive candidates. At the core of recruiting a passive candidate is considering things from the candidate’s point of view. I like to call it “walk a mile in the other person’s shoes.” In order to make a compelling presentation to a passive candidate, the Recruiter must rely on his or her ability and skill to listen, find the right fit for the candidate and successfully sell the opportunity.

Another core skill is communication and having the tenacity to make the phone calls, and to make them consistently, while maintaining consistent follow-up and communication with your customer or hiring manager. This is not rocket science, but it seems to be the number one challenge that I see for Recruiters. We get so caught up in moving candidates through, that some forget how critical it is to communicate with the hiring manager and articulate the candidate flow.

The success of an organization comes from great leadership as well as high performing teams backing them up. Being a successful Recruiter can be tough but a true champion is tenacious, resilient and inspires others around them. Are you a successful Recruiter?
