A look at a union organizing website

Websites used for union organizing

Some labor relations news out of Canada – UFCW Local 1518 is trying to organize a grocery chain in Vancouver.  The union recently set up a website aimed at Thrifty employees.   It is interesting to look at the messaging to employees that they are using.

If you work at Thrifty’s you have probably noticed some changes occurring as a result of the purchase of the company in 2007 by the grocery giant, Sobeys.

No doubt you are concerned about the future, and about being treated with respect and fairness by the new owners.

Some Thrifty Foods stores may have experienced more changes than others, but be assured, significant change is coming.

Thrifty Foods has enjoyed a unique position in the grocery business on Vancouver Island since its inception over 25 years ago.

Under the leadership and direction of founder Alex Campbell, employees occupied the most important position as Thrifty’s built a loyal following based on excellent customer service and quality products. As Thrifty’s grew and expanded throughout Vancouver Island and into the lower mainland, it became known for its fair treatment of its employees. For those looking for a career, there was the clear possibility of a future with the company.

With new ownership, those days are over.

According to a story in the Times Colonist, this is not the first attempt to organize at Thrifty, and the company is responding to the efforts.

Jim Dores, senior vice-president and senior manager of Sobeys’ community banner and wholesale business in Ontario, became Thrifty Foods’ new president this month, replacing Milford Sorensen. Dores is currently on a tour to visit all 26 stores.

Erin Kelly, Thrifty Foods communications manager, said employees can earn higher salaries because of the company’s merit-based compensation system than at unionized supermarkets. If staff exceed expectation, they receive a “merit increase” above a set rate.

Other benefits include a scholarship program, a defined pension plan and professional development including online education, and management certification and in-house apprenticeship programs, she said.

Founded in Victoria, Thrifty Foods is in expansion mode.

Construction is also slated to begin this year on a $31-million distribution centre on Victoria International Airport property
