A Comparison Between Web Conferencing and Video Conferencing

Many people get confused with web and video conferencing. To avoid that confusion, this article will help you identify what the differences between these two are.

Web Conferencing

Web conferencing is when someone can conduct meetings, give seminars or pitch sales presentations to different people who are geographically dispersed. This kind of conferencing can either be referred to as web conference or webinar. Simply put, web conferencing is not interactive. While participants may be able to view what the presenter is currently showing them, they cannot alter or make any changes.

Advanced web conferencing software allows the speaker to share files, documents and other applications with other participants and take control of it via a remote computer. When the service is used remotely, it is called desktop sharing or application sharing.

There are many types of web conferencing services available. You would be amazed to know but the most advanced web conferencing services can cost up to hundreds of dollars every month due to extended software and tools that can be installed on every participants’ computers. This type also makes use of a specific firewall and a higher bandwidth internet connection for a consistent data streaming. But there are also some which are free or are mid-priced to suit homes and mid-size organizations. These services have imposed a restriction on the number of participants and do not have the exact same tools which the expensive ones have.

The other important thing to remember about web conferencing is that it doesn’t need a special video component. It simply uses a small amount of bandwidth to conduct video conferencing which can work over a dial up. It is usually conducted with the use of a video conference so participants can see the speaker and better understand what the speaker is saying.

Video Conferencing

Video conferencing, as the name implies is when cameras are used so that participants can participate in a virtual conference meeting. This enables participants to not only see the speaker but sometimes, also other participants.

The main use of the video conferencing service in businesses is so they can have one on one meetings with clients despite being in different locations. To ensure the reliability of video conferencing, before higher bandwidths were available, signals were transmitted using point to point connections via ISDN lines. But now that the internet has simplified the way the signals and data are transmitted, some connectivity issues have been eliminated allowing businesses to take care of business activities online.

Over the years, there have been many affordable conferencing services available aimed not only for small businesses but also for large-scale businesses. If you simply manage a small business or work from home, you may find that a web conferencing which make use of webcams can suffice. But if you’re running a large-scale business, you might want to purchase a service which offers multi-platform video conferencing service to ensure that your business activities will be conducted smoothly and with no problems.
