I lead a series of workshops and 1 on 1 coaching work with several managers based on the work of Ferdinand Fournies and his research on:

Why Don’t Employee do what they are supposed to do? And what to do about it.

BTW the top 5 reasons are:

  • 1. They don’t know what they are supposed to do.
  • 2. They don’t know how to do it.
  • 3. They don’t know why they should do it.
  • 4. They think they are doing it (lack of feedback).
  • 5. There are obstacles beyond their control.

One common area that most manages agreed on and we got stuck on were sources of reward and punishment on the job. Most of the managers knew how damaging KITA kick in the ass management was AND that you can never truly motivate anyone to do better all you can do is create an environment for people to do their best work.

In this series of workshops and 1 on 1 coaching we agreed that rewards and punishment to people in their roles at work come from three sources.

  • The Work Itself
  • Fellow Workers
  • The Direct Manager
