3 Profitable Google Trends

Google Trends ~ Explore

With a massive holiday line-up closing in, the Google Trends tool has never been more profitable.

If you’re in the eCommerce world, or know someone who is, be sure to take advantage of the following 3 trends (with some bonus examples at the end).

Trend #1 – Pokemon Costume

The following Google trends report shows the increasing popularity of searchers looking for a popular costume (just in time for Halloween) and the accessories that go along with it.

We can order each item by importance as follows:

  • Fingerless gloves (one of the most defining accessories of the “Ash Ketchum” character costume)
  • Pokeballs (another defining accessory for any Pokemon themed costume)
  • Ash Ketchum Hat (the third core defining feature of the costume)

We can do this for any popular costume, such as Batman, Zombie, Dracula, Fairy, Princess, Ninja, etc…

The trick is to find the accessories that are in-demand; these are the profitable nuggets that could be optimized for and sold succesffuly in spurts via eCommerce.

Trend #2 – Chanukah Accessories

Continuing on the accessories trend, let’s take a look at the popular Jewish holiday; Chanukah

Menorahs, dreidels, and gelt (in that order) are the essentials of a Chanukah celebration. Of course, there are many other items such as popular foods like Matzah/Matzot – or even chanukah themed wrapping paper.

We have to think strategically and creatively about what people are searching for.

Some people spell Chanukah without the “C” and thus, we must account for those search queries as well.

Trend #3 – Gift Ideas

Here we can see the relative increase in popularity.

I wanted to highlight these stats because “boss gift ideas” has a 300% increase. Can you guess why?

This past Wednesday was “Boss’s Day” – obviously a lot of people don’t know their bosses well enough :)

Here’s a general look at some popular gift ideas search queries:

Seems like women are getting the short end of the stick, huh?

At any rate, these are the high volume, super competitive terms. We wouldn’t really want to compete with these terms.

Instead, we should run searches for these gift ideas, and then optimize for the longer tail, niche gift ideas that are less competitive.

We don’t want to optimize for something like “gta 5″ which is arguably still the most in-demand game.

Here are 4 ideas to get you started on this thought path:

Hydroflask

Nike+ FuelBand

Swimming Pool Fence

The Art of Shaving Kit

You could always optimize pages to rank for these keywords – or variations thereof.

A tactful strategy would be to review those middle-ground popularity gift ideas (the products) and profit from affiliate/referral.

Additionally, notice how the spikes for “swimming pool fence” occur in spring months.

This is a fairly basic metric to notice for seasoned eCommerce practitioners, but for beginners, it’s fundamental to understand why spikes occur.

Google trends does an outstanding job providing us with historical patterns. Try identifying patterns yourself – it’s very easy to get the hang of after a few tries.

Just go to Google Trends and literally brainstorm queries you’d think people would search <<< this is your hypothesis.

Now use Google’s regular search engine to mine data to test your hypothesis. (This is what I demonstrated with the “gift ideas” example)

Let me know how it turns out or if you have any questions, cheers!
