Tell Me, What Type Of Leader Are You?

Yesterday, I wrote about the primary responsibilities of a leader being enabling their people and then removing obstacles.

I spend a lot of time in board rooms and offices talking with C-Suite leaders. Most of these leaders, when I ask them if they are developing their people and removing obstacles, will respond with, “Yes!” and “Oh yeah!”

For the best leaders, and it is really always pretty obvious who they are, I know when I ask their people I am going to get the same answers.

However, for the challenged leaders, it is also equally obvious when I ask their people the same question I am going to get a very different answer.

Since you are reading this, let me ask you the same questions;

Dear Mr. or Ms. Reader,

1. If you are a leader, are you developing and enabling your people to be leaders?
2. Are you removing obstacles daily that impede excellence?

If your answer is, “Oh yeah” or “totally,” then good on you!

But here is the acid test.

If I ask your team the exact same questions, what type of leader would they say you are?

In my experience, it is very bifurcated. Meaning, there really is no middle ground answers.

For the aligned leaders they are truly seen as Chief Obstacle Remover Officers.

For the challenged leaders, they are pretty much viewed as bosshole’s.

My hope for you is that you are the former, and not the latter.

If you want to increase the odds in your favor, make sure that you are developing your people and removing obstacles every day.
