Imagine the scene: A talented, young college graduate is ready to enter today’s job market.

He’s armed to the teeth with a CV chock full of great internships, excellent grades and collegiate honors, and three solid references certain to impress. Tucked under his arm is an impressive portfolio of work demonstrating that he isn’t only well-studied, but capable, too.

For so many of today’s job seekers, that’s where the preparation ends. Ten years ago, it would have been enough. Today, you need a Resume 2.0. You need a web site – and specifically, you need a blog.

Lucky for you, it’s never been easier to build a strong, professional site to showcase your talents for prospective employers.

Personal branding and your job search website

Before you start sending out CVs, build yourself a simple site. Purchase a domain name and hosting (yourname.com is a good bet if it’s still available) and install a simple content management system to build your site (I’m a big fan of ...

Focus on who you know

job search networkKeeping tabs on what your friends and contacts are doing is a fundamental step in your job search. Although LinkedIn is great for leveraging 2nd and 3rd degree connections, you’d be surprised how helpful your 1st degree friends and acquaintances can be towards building the influence you seek.

Tools such as Gist, for example, sync all of your online networks with your e-mail, Google Calendar and more to build a dashboard of all the people and businesses you are associated with.

You’d be amazed at the quantity and quality of the companies you are connected to just from your friends and address book!

Creating an overview of these relationships can be an instrumental step in planning your job search and networking strategies.

With this information, you are sure you discover contacts that might have just the leverage you need to point you towards a job opening.

5 Most Popular Twitter Directories That Will Grow Your Personal Brand

Like the classic phone book, being listed in the most popular directories is a surefire way to be found more on Twitter.

Directory listing tips

  • Popular directories became popular because they are generally easy to use, and specifically so for listing yourself. Take advantage of all the options to give yourself exposure is as many relevant categories as possible.
  • When a directory limits the number of categories (or tags) where you can list yourself (such as 5 for WeFollow, 10 for Twellow), browse all the categories that are relevant to your personal brand and then choose the best trade-off among the categories that you ‘must’ be in and the categories where you can rank highly e.g. on the first page of listings for that category.

WeFollow – to add yourself, click here.

Then, enter your city and choose your 5 ‘interests’ which will determine in which categories you appear in WeFollow (elsewhere on the site, they’re called tags).

One annoyance- be careful of the fine print at the bottom of the page, in particular where WeFollow ‘offers’ to have your Twitter profile page link to your WeFollow profile page. Otherwise, I like WeFollow for the ...

3 Best Free Twitter Background Image Makers

How to get a Twitter background image that almost looks like it came from a professional graphic designer.

There are many websites that let you download free Twitter backgrounds but here I specifically focus on the websites that let you generate Twitter backgrounds with your own personal branding information.

Twitbacks

1) Twitbacks

Once you get past the annoying popup ads that appear the first few times you click a link, Twitbacks is pretty good.

After creating an account, the “create your twitter background” page with its long form of options lets you pick and choose which information you want to appear in your new background, including (non-clickable) links to your social media profiles and other websites.

A nice touch is letting you categorize your profile so that when you’re done, it’s automatically added to Twitbacks’ directory of Twitter profiles.

Not-too-expensive paid options let you choose a snazzier, less generic template or remove the Twitbacks logo that will otherwise appear on your new background image.

5 Ways Twitter @Anywhere Will Help Grow Your Personal Brand

With the announcement of Twitter @Anywhere, your Twitter profile will soon be able to get a lot more exposure.

So wait, what is Twitter @Anywhere and why should I care?

Right now you don’t need to care, because @Anywhere isn’t available yet, but it will be soon…

Pronounced ‘At Anywhere’, it’s a new technology from Twitter that will help your personal branding through Twitter by:

Highlighting your name on a website

On any @Anywhere-enabled website, text that matches a Twitter user’s name (but not their username) will cause a small popup or ‘hovercard’ with some of your Twitter information to appear when moused over.

I’m willing to bet that any text that corresponds to the name of a Twitter user will be automatically linked for hovercard purposes, so the more your name appears on @Anywhere-enabled sites, the more chances to gain followers.

It will be interesting to see how Twitter will manage all the spammers using the same names as other people, or even just regular people who share a name. I really ...

45 Power Users’ Twitter Productivity Secrets

How Twitter power users get things done on Twitter with their thousands of followers.

Phyllis Mufson avatar Phyllis Mufson, @phyllismufson: My Twitter productivity (and enjoyment) leapt when I signed on to TweetDeck and began using its’ column function to organize my followers by special interest groups. I recommend it highly – or other similar services like Seesmic. I also make a lot of use of the ‘Favorites’ function. When I have a few free minutes in the day, I ‘favorite’ tweets with articles, videos, etc. that look interesting, and then have a stockpile of interesting material to explore when I have free time.
Susan Joyce avatar Susan P. Joyce, @JobHuntOrg: For me, TweetDeck/JobDeck make Twitter manageable and more, because they can be added or removed instantly, shuffled around to be always on screen or not –

  • Create up a Group of my career friends, so I see their latest Tweets in a column.
  • Follow a good list, like one for world-wide news organizations, one for US business news, etc. to get the latest news across the globe in a column, and TweetDeck ...
