Focus on who you know

Keeping tabs on what your friends and contacts are doing is a fundamental step in your job search. Although LinkedIn is great for leveraging 2nd and 3rd degree connections, you’d be surprised how helpful your 1st degree friends and acquaintances can be towards building the influence you seek.

Tools such as Gist, for example, sync all of your online networks with your e-mail, Google Calendar and more to build a dashboard of all the people and businesses you are associated with.

You’d be amazed at the quantity and quality of the companies you are connected to just from your friends and address book!

Creating an overview of these relationships can be an instrumental step in planning your job search and networking strategies.

Like the classic phone book, being listed in the most popular directories is a surefire way to be found more on Twitter.

Directory listing tips

Popular directories became popular because they are generally easy to use, and specifically so for listing yourself. Take advantage of all the options to give yourself exposure is as many relevant categories as possible.
When a directory limits the number of categories (or tags) where you can list yourself (such as 5 for WeFollow, 10 for Twellow), browse all the categories that are relevant to your personal brand and then choose the best trade-off among the categories that you ‘must’ be in and the categories where you can rank highly e.g. on the first page of listings for that category.

How to get a Twitter background image that almost looks like it came from a professional graphic designer.

There are many websites that let you download free Twitter backgrounds but here I specifically focus on the websites that let you generate Twitter backgrounds with your own personal branding information.

1) Twitbacks

Once you get past the annoying popup ads that appear the first few times you click a link, Twitbacks is pretty good.

After creating an account, the “create your twitter background” page with its long form of options lets you pick and choose which information you want to appear in your new background, including (non-clickable) links to your social media profiles and other websites.

A nice touch is letting you categorize your profile so that when you’re done, it’s automatically added to Twitbacks’ directory of Twitter profiles.

Highlighting your name on a website

On any @Anywhere-enabled website, text that matches a Twitter user’s name (but not their username) will cause a small popup or ‘hovercard’ with some of your Twitter information to appear when moused over.

I’m willing to bet that any text that corresponds to the name of a Twitter user will be automatically linked for hovercard purposes, so the more your name appears on @Anywhere-enabled sites, the more chances to gain followers.

Phyllis Mufson, @phyllismufson: My Twitter productivity (and enjoyment) leapt when I signed on to TweetDeck and began using its’ column function to organize my followers by special interest groups. I recommend it highly – or other similar services like Seesmic. I also make a lot of use of the ‘Favorites’ function. When I have a few free minutes in the day, I ‘favorite’ tweets with articles, videos, etc. that look interesting, and then have a stockpile of interesting material to explore when I have free time.
