There are hundreds of ways to help in Haiti. I was going to write a profile of Doctors without Borders. I decided to take a different direction instead. So here is an aggregated list of charities that different groups have recommended, along with their ratings as obtained from Charity Navigator. Another excellent resource for researching charity organizations is the American Institute of Philanthropy.
Ways to support Haiti Relief
International Living believes that the best and most efficient way to help in Haiti is by making a donation to the American Red Cross. You can make a contribution directly to the Red Cross here. You can find many other organizations they support listed here.
The blog Zen Habits is donating profits from their book sales for the next 30 days.
Bloggers Unite has an on-going event for Haiti that you can find here.
Mother Jones suggest Oxfam America.
The Untours Foundation highly recommends Fonkoze, an efficient and compassionate Haitian micro– finance bank. It has over 200,000 depositors and gives out over 50,000 loans annually. You can donate through its website: www.fonkoze.org. Miraculously, Fonkoze keeps working throughout, and is even posting updates through this current crisis. It has been there all along, and will be there after the emergency aid and aid workers are long gone. If you prefer to donate to Fonkoze through the Untours Foundation, you may do so here: www.untoursfoundation.org/donation.html (includes check mailing information). Please make a note that the donation is for Haiti. They will send your money directly to Fonkoze.
